The Top 20 Search Engine Ranking Factors

Posted by admin on Jan 02 2009 | Search Engine Optimization

1. Title Tag:

Type your targeted keyword phrase in ANY search engine and notice how 9 of the top 10 sites have that targeted phrase somewhere in their title tag.

*Learn from your competitors and remember keyword density and prominence.

2. Heading Tag Structure

H1, H2, H3, H4 and no more. Remember H1 is what the whole page is about and the other ’sub’ H’s are explaining each section under that heading. A good way to look at this is to look at it in a standard outline format.

A. = H1

— a. = H2

—— i. H3

— b. = H2

—— i. H4

—— ii. H3 & H4

— c. = H2

—— i. =H3

——— 1. H4

3. META Description

The META description is there to describe the page. So describe the page. Remember your page is about your targeted keywords. Make sure those keywords are scattered throughout the description of each page. Also, sometimes the search engines will display your description under your listings on the SERP’s (Search Engine Results Page). Therefore make the description captivating enough to make the visitors want to click on your website and not your competitor’s.

4. Age of Site

Arguably, this is the deciding factor when picking between 2 sites with great stats. Search engines trust websites that have been around for a long time. This is because if the site wasn’t valuable, it would not be on-line any longer. Even though this factor is a huge factor, it’s only a factor for old active domains. Old, yet active domains that have history of constant updates and consistently acquiring links are the hardest sites to beat.

5. Total Pages Indexed

The total # of pages indexed is very important because usually the more pages indexed the more keywords you will be targeting. This is not always true, however considering this is USUALLY true; this is definitely a factor in search engines’ algorithms. The more pages you have, the more chances your site has to get found. Furthermore every page linking within your site (if done right) could build strong internal page rank.

6. Anchor Text of internal Links

It’s important that the links within your site that leads visitors from one page to another describes that page with the keyword it’s targeting.
IE: Get directions to our San Diego Location

7. Total Backlinks

YES, the amount of back links still matters. The more links you have, the better. BUT, it’s the more relevant links from the greatest variety of sites, the better. You need links from blogs, forums, authority sites, educations sites, local area sites, industry sites, etc. They all must be relevant to you. The more accurate the relativity, the more closer you are to being the most relevant site to the searcher’s query. The more (relevant) links, the merrier.

8. Anchor Text of Incoming Links

Originally if someone linked to your site, that someone was a different person with a different website giving you a link titling your company name. So if someone Googles your company name, you’d be the first to show up because other sites said that’s who you are. But, new potential customers aren’t looking for your web site. People are searching for your services. So you have to find ways to get links describing the services you offer.

This way other sites are vouching that you are “men’s clothing”. The SERP’s already know you’re Men’s Ware House.

9. Average Time on Site

One factor that helps Google determine if your site is a site that will give visitors a pleasant user experience is to record how long visitors stay at your site. The longer you can keep a visitor on your site the more likely you are providing that user with an experience worth sticking around for.

10. Bounce Rate

Like Average Time on Site, Bounce Rate is a metric that measures the worth of your page. Do visitors come to your site and click the back button more often than not? Normally if 80% of the people visiting your site are clicking the back button, that site is not relevant to what they were searching for.

11. Strength of Competition

To be honest, this really isn’t a factor in its own. The strength of the competition is probably the backbone of every factor. Ranking results are based on a comparative scale. Meaning the number 1 site is more relevant then the number 2 site based on ALL of these factors. Good ways to measure the strength of the competition is analyze their Alexa Rank, Total Pages Indexed, Total Backlinks and their Google Pagerank.

12. Total Character Count

The more content you have, the better chance you have at satisfying your visitor’s query. Google looks for special keywords within your content to back up the keywords you are targeting.
If you are targeting men’s clothing, Google looks for terms that will answer every visitor’s query. Like pants, shirts, prices, location, xl, discounts, customer service, socks, fitting room, fabric, fashion, etc. Usually to cover all of the visitors’ possible questions, you need to provide a lot of unique and informative content.

13. Page Rank

(Ceterus Paribus) Yes, page rank still counts. Many “SEO’s” will tell you that this doesn’t matter. But, the core of Google’s algorithm is based on Page Rank.

14. Keyword Placement

Where amongst all of your content and web pages is your target keywords located? Keywords should have prominent placement in paragraphs supporting their matching headings. Naturally placing your keyword in rich related content the right amount of times is arguably the top ranking factor.

15. Types of Media

Have you noticed videos on the SERP’s ranking higher than you?
Or, have you ever ended up at a site through a picture?
Having a variety of media types shows that you are presenting your targeted keywords in various forms, this is most likely pleasing a variety of visitors.

16. HTML Validation

Content : Code ratio is a ranking factor. It must be easy for the bots to run through your site. Also when spiders run through your site, it’s necessary that you prevent any traps that could prevent the spider from crawling your site completely and finding all of your content. Broken links are also a big no, no. The bots hate getting led to nothing.

17. Navigation and Architecture

How your site is built and themed is very important for spider indexing and visitor navigation. The paths your visitors take are being recorded. So make sure the pages you want to rank well are easy to find for the user. Having your targeted keywords categorized and your page structure in a siloing format is best. Also add a site map to your website so the spiders could have a one stop page to your whole domain.

18. Click-through-Rate on SERP

Google wants to provide results the visitors want. And to help them determine what they want is to record how many times out of a 1,000 impressions do people click through to your site. If your listing has the highest click through rate it must be because your title, description and or brand are what the users was most likely looking for. This is why title tags and META descriptions are 2 of the other 20 factors in ranking well on the SERP’s

19. Total Search Queries Conducted After Leaving Site

If the user searches for that same term over and over again, they must not have found what they were looking for. Your site should answer the visitors query by proving data to the engines that proves that visitor don’t need to look any further.

20. Percentage of Return Visits

The higher percentage you have of returning visitors, the better. High return rate means people who have visited your site before enjoyed their visit and found your site valuable. This factor is used in helping Google help others find a site that the visitor may find interesting. So if your site is relevant to the searcher’s query and everyone that visits your site returns, Google will use this as a measure of a relevant and interesting site, thus leading to search engine higher rankings.

Website Design and SEO - Does it Really Matter?

Posted by admin on Jan 02 2009 | Search Engine Optimization

These days I have come upon a lot of websites which might not have an aesthetically appealing look but still manage to draw enough traffic. So the most important question is whether ‘Design of Websites is all that important’.

From SEO view and Search Engine point of view, web design is not all that important. After all Google bots and spiders that crawl through your websites will not have any appreciation of the aesthetic elements of Website design. They are looking for content and all that FLASH stuff in your websites including the cool pictures that you have put is not going to have any impact in search engine ranking.

But that leaves out the most important factor for traffic generation - The Human Element. A poorly designed site might not catch the retentivity of your viewers. So repeat visits and the social viral form of advertising will come down drastically. How many of your visitors are going to StumbleUpon or Digg or Socially book mark your site , if it doesn’t capture their imagination. So you might tend to lose a lot of traffic that way.

Because a poorly designed site doesn’t capture the viewers interest, your Ads (Google Adsense , Bidvertiser) could tend to stand out. The viewer in frustration could click the ads to see something relevant. That way you could generate some revenue. Let us call it the disinterested viewer adsense revenue.

So where do I stand. Let me summarize my perspectives on the subject briefly.

1). A poorly designed site but optimized for Search engines will bring a lot of First Time traffic. These first time viewers would in frustration click the ads to get something relevant. Since the ads would be context based, the clicking of the ads would lead to some viewer satisfaction and hence all is not lost.

2). A poorly designed site will rate very poorly in Brand value. Hence no viewer will take the trouble to socially bookmark the site. A very important form of viral traffic, which otherwise would have come to the site, had it been properly designed, is lost.

So what are the lessons that one can learn from here.

1). Don’t spend a fortune in designing your website. Make it decent enough to hold the attention span of your viewer. Content is King. Remember that always.

2). Try not to make your website cool. A cool website is good to look at. But many of your first time visitors will not have the patience to wait for the whole page to load. They will leave in disgust probably never to return again.

Make your website content worthy and Search Engine Friendly.

Backlinks - What They Are and How to Get Them

Posted by admin on Jan 02 2009 | Search Engine Optimization

Sometimes called inbound links, backlinks are the lifeblood of Search Engine Positioning. In order for a website to be on the top of search engines like Google without the webmaster having to pay big money for advertising, the website has to have a large number of backlinks. Backlinks are links on one website that lead back to another website. The more established, high quality, and high Page Rank the website that contains the link has, the more power it has to help the linked website with its search engine position. If the website that is getting backlinks gets many High Quality and High Page Rank backlinks, the better the chance it has of being in a high position on the Search Engines.

How does a webmaster go about getting high quality backlinks to his or her website? There are many ways this can be done. Some people advocate writing and submitting articles, posting on forums, making comments on blogs. Others talk about submitting their website to various Internet directories. One directory that has an excellent reputation is called DMOZ, or the “Open Directory”. This directory is probably the most respected directory online today. The websites it contains have all been placed there by human editors; there is no “automation” to this directory. The only drawback that’s been discussed about this directory is that it takes so long to have a website included.

Another way that many people build backlinks for their website is to use Social Bookmarking websites. A “Social Bookmark” is a website that usually has a very popular ‘community’ aspect to it. Users sign up and create profiles on the sites that contain photos and information about themselves. They then can save “bookmarks” of favorite websites which can be itemized by ‘tags’, which are one or two word descriptions of what the sites contain, and these bookmarks can be saved to a list that’s private or can be listed publicly, so that everybody can see it.

With the advent of what is known as Web 2.0, gaining backlinks is easier now than in any time in the history of the internet. Most sites now have an “interactive” quality to them nowadays. Readers can often sign in and create profiles. They then are often allowed to post comments on the stories or articles on the website or blog. In many cases, the website or blog owner responds to these comments; thus making this section of the website or blog a conversation.

Backlinking strategies can be easy and fun and the website owner who is working on getting more backlinks for his website can learn new things, meet new people, and have a tremendous amount of fun doing something that was once a chore: building backlinks.

Does Google SEO Magic Really Help Get 1 Page Ranking in 24 Hours?

Posted by admin on Jan 02 2009 | Search Engine Optimization

After buying the Google SEO Magic I soon had traffic coming in, but it wasn’t quite what I expected. There were certainly some surprises along the way that everyone needs to know about before they buy it.

Although you have to go through the trouble of messaging your click bank receipt number to Antonio Coleman on you tube to get your user name and password to the videos, the process viewing the product is quick. Once I started watching the videos in the member section, things got very interesting and some helpful things are exposed.

When I signed up for Google SEO Magic, I was skeptical about how this product could show me how to get front page ranking on Google in 24 hours, especially since there weren’t many testimonials out there about the product. It turns out that it actually does show you methods to get on the first page of Google but it’s not all equal in Google search engine.

Once you gain access to the members area of the Google SEO Magic website and begin your campaign it becomes clear that whether you get first page ranking depends on keywords and if you take action on what it tells you to do.

I noticed that one keyword I used i got 1st page ranking on Google. Then I tried another keyword and did everything Google SEO Magic told me to do and the results weren’t as good. I got 2nd page results, but it shows you how to pick keyword so they will rank better.

So although some keywords rank better than others, Google SEO Magic does make good on their promise of helping you rank on the first page in 24 hours. In fact, im ranked in 24 hours of only one of the methods used in the video tutorials. Yea, No kidding. I’ve already brought in 1000 dollars worth a traffic in a month from Google SEO Magic. It seems that Google SEO Magic is the real deal.

How to Create SEO Friendly File Names

Posted by admin on Jan 02 2009 | Search Engine Optimization

This is something easy to do and Google highly recommends you to do it. It is always important that what Google likes you should do if possible.

File names are the names of your website pages. For example: A page about dog food you probably will name it something like dogfood.html

Google suggests you use punctuation marks in your file names. Instead of dogfood.html put it dog-food.html

You should use the - symbol to separate words, not the _ symbol.

This is great way for visitors to understand faster and easier what the page is about. Makes sense.

Google always tried to give their users (the people who search the search engine) the best results and experience. These little things make a difference, and for search engine optimization purposes you will get (even though small) credit. It is a good thing to do.

Do not however go and rename all your website pages. That will results in lots of 404 page not found error pages. Just for next time when you create pages, start using the punctuation symbol to separate words.

Let me give you few more examples. Wrong way to name a page is catfood.html or cheapcatfoods.html

Good way to name a page instead is cat-food.html or cheap-cat-foods.html Easy and simple tip. File names also make more sense.

Something to think about now. Blogger blog platform is created and owned by Google. By default the blogs you created are search engine optimized. Notice the file names of the post pages. They are all created with the punctuation symbol. Google implemented this in the blogger blogs by default.

Here are some more tips on this subject.

1) Do not create a ton of different folders or directories on your website. For example create a folder named articles and put all articles inside it.

2) Avoid creating sub domains with identical or very similar content as your domain name.

3) Make meta tags unique for each webpage. If your site is big, you obviously cannot make each page with a unique meta tag. In that case at least make the most important pages with very descriptive meta tags that clearly describe what the page is about.

4) Avoid also creating pages like this: www.domainname.com/Support

(You do that by creating a new folder called Support, then putting an index.html page inside the folder) That can result in some errors too with redirection and so on.

So it is best to create html pages, like this: www.domainname.com/Support.html

These things that deal with how to structure your website and so on are all known as onpage optimization strategies/methods or techniques.

They are not so important as the offpage optimization strategies, which deal with getting links. But they still count and obviously simple things like these you should start implementing them.

Help the Search Engines Index Your Internet Home Business

Posted by admin on Jan 02 2009 | Search Engine Optimization

One of the big struggles any home business owner has is getting traffic to their website from the search engines. Every website owner wants the search engines to notice their website as soon as possible. The faster the search engine will index the website the faster you will see traffic coming in and with it the costumers and the money.

There are many different ways to get the search engines to index you and your new internet home business, some work better than the others, and while some work for you it does not mean it will work for others too.

1- Search engine submission. This is a not a much recommended step, but you can use it with a brand new website. It take time for the search engines to index your website, sometime it can take up to 3 months, in this time you can use this method, but not over do it. Once a month is more than enough, and no matter what you do, do not pay for a submission service.

2- The best way to make the search engines notice your new website is using search engine optimization, known also as SEO. It means you need to do some things with and to your website and help the search engines find it.

SEO is all about keywords. Doing a research for your main keywords and then using them on your website, in your title and in your text. Like any other tool, too much is not better, the search engines will notice you, but they won’t like what they see, and they may index your website with the rest of the spam sites.

To avoid this worst case scenario, you will have to maximize your SEO efforts and squeeze the most out of them without making it look bad in the eyes of the search engines.

You also have to remember that not only the search engines need to notice you, but your visitors need to like you too. You website must be friendly to both search engines and humans. Once the engines will index your website, your visitors are the ones to read it, and they need to understand you and your business.

3- Other internet marketing methods will help you too. Blogging on a regular basis, article marketing with optimizing your keywords, and posting in forums, all this methods will help you build your backlinks, and the more quality backlinks you have, the search engines will like you more, you will rank higher and index faster.

This is not mission impossible, and internet home business owners all around the world already proved that it can be done, and you can do it to. It is all about learning SEO and implementing the search engine optimization tips. Take what you learned and use it on your own website make more search engine friendly and also people friendly. It will help not only help the engines to index you website quicker, but your visitors will come back again too.

Get First Page on Google Searches - SEO (Search Engine Optimization) Basics and Tips

Posted by admin on Jan 02 2009 | Search Engine Optimization

Do you want to get first page on Google? If you have a web page or blog, you likely already are first page for some searches. With a bit of SEO, you can gain first page on more searches. And its simple.

The first and most obvious step is think about what words or phrases you want to be first page on.

Once you have that list, determine how many people are searching for those terms. To check how popular a search is you will need a tool. I use Wordtracker (there is a free online version). The higher the number, the more popular the search. No point in trying to optimize for a word or phrase that is rarely searched.

There is also no point in trying to optimize for a word that is too popular because getting a high ranking there will be almost impossible.

Think about “long tail”

Think about how people will search. People often search with a question. EG where do I find X? Or where do I find Y in Canada. The longer the string, the less competition you will have for it so the easier you will get ranked.

So make the list of phrases you want to “own” and ones that are realistic to “own”.

Now it is simple. Just put these words and phrases in your titles, picture descriptions, videos and in your text. The titles are the most important. That is why a blog called “Shrimp Fish Soup Recipes” will get good Google juice on all 4 words. So searching “Shrimp soup” will get first page. Or “fish soup recipes” or “Shrimp recipes” etc.

Yes you want to repeat your words and phrases often in the text. This said - write naturally. Never let SEO be a substitute for good content.

So you do this and you still are not first page. That is because you do not have enough credibility with Google. You need another free tool to check this. I use a free Firefox plugin called searchstatus. It gives me both the PageRank and the Alexa rating of any web page. Higher PageRank numbers are better. High credibility is your ultimate goal as that is what gets you ranked first and Alexa tells you traffic (a lower number is better)

How do you increase your PageRank?

It is all about quality inbound links. You want people with a high credibility (PageRank 4+) to link to you - eg Wall St Journal would be great. More is better and link rank is almost logarithmic so a PageRank of 6 is worth 10 times one of 5 etc.

This said, for you to get a link from an 8 rated site like pornstars.com would not increase your rank in the business genre. Sites are ranked for relevance.

The best inbound links are contextual. So someone blogging and saying I heard time management guru John Doe speak and hot linking from “Time management guru” is great for John Doe. Second best, hot link from “John Doe”. Third is just having a link on a blogroll without any context.

You get a higher rank if you update your content regularly. That is why having a blog on your site is a good way to increase your ranking.

Moderate cross linking within your own material will also increase your rank and clarify for google what it is that you do.

3 ways to get links to your site:
1 - Ask politely. You might not always get a link but it never hurts to ask.

2 - Comment on other relevant blogs (and have your PageRank on so you ignore low PageRank and high alexa). Note that most comments in themselves do not constitute a link. But being out there gets people to look at you. You need people to look at your stuff for them to be inspired to link to it.

3 - Have good material. People link to quality. But of course they have to see it so promote your content:
Have your URL on all your print material, cards, letterhead, email sig file etc
Write guest articles and blogs in the right (high traffic) places (check the Alexa).
PR - get written about
Contribute to other sites. EG write reviews on Amazon, join the conversations.

And a word of warning. Never play games (like buying links).

In the end it is about having good quality material. And being out there so people look at your material. People link to quality without you asking as long as they know about it.

So, here are a few things which have an immediate and lasting impact on your rankings:

On Page Issues:

3 Best Ways to Get a Number One Search Rank on Google

Posted by admin on Jan 02 2009 | Search Engine Optimization

Okay… I’ve been playing around with how to get a number one rank on Google and I’ve had some pretty good luck using the following strategies. So, I’m writing this article to reveal my 3 Best Ways How To Get a Number One Rank On Google.

It all depends on your keywords, competition for them and whatever else is already out there about you or your company, but here’s what I find is working best right now…

Number 1 Way To Get a Number 1 Rank On Google

The best way I’ve found to get top rank so far is using a WordPress hosted blog site. If you set one of these free sites up and write good articles rich in the keywords you want Google to find you for, then you have a really good shot at getting a number 1 rank on Google within a few hours.

Number 2 Way To Get a Number One Rank On Google

The second best way I’ve found to get a number one rank on Google is by creating a website on Hubpages.com. They have free websites you can create, even if you don’t know anything about html or programming, and your site can include video, audio, and all sorts of other good stuff. Again, the key is to provide content rich in the keywords you want Google to give you a number one ranking for.

Number 3 Way to Get a Number 1 Rank On Google

Video is the new king, and it takes a little more work to create, so Google seems to like the video sharing sites that are out there. Interestingly enough, Google’s own, YouTube, is not nearly as good as some of the others like Viddler in generating top ranks.

These are the top 3 best ways how to get a number one rank on Google as of the time of this writing. That’s bound to change, but I have to say that this has been working for me for my terms for a while now.
